The California Media Collaborative joined forces with the Center for Investigative Reporting to establish California Watch in May 2009.

The California Media Collaborative  convened forums on the role of the media in shaping key state issues, as well as to enhance the capabilities of media to engage Californians more fully in the democratic process.

These included the following:

  • Engaging Californians in Health Care Reform: The Role of Media and New Media Innovations

A day-long meeting was held in Los Angeles, California on November 17, 2008 with representatives from several constituencies examined media coverage and health care reform.

  • Covering California: Media, Community and Democracy in the Golden State

In September 2007, it convened a landmark invitational conference at UC Berkeley in conjunction with the Travers Program in Ethics and Accountability in Government. Over 200 leaders from key California constituencies attended the day-long event.

The Collaborative also produced a report, Covering California: Perspectives on the Media, based on interviews with 70 California leaders, looking at media coverage of California, and new strategies for improving it.
