Can Newspapers Survive in Online-only Formats?

Whenever the survival of newspapers comes up for discussion — very frequently these days — within minutes someone is likely to suggest that they simply cut out their daily hard copy editions, and go to online-formats.

Taking the San Francisco Chronicle to an online-only operation has been the most popular proposal in recent days since the Hearst Corporation threatened to sell and close the paper this week.

Turns out that transformation will not be easy to make.
